On 9 June, members of the TheatreHD Opera Club at the GUM Cinema Hall will witness a fierce battle between two divas of world opera – Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanča – for the king's heart! Audiences will be treated to Gaetano Donizetti's 'Anna Bolena', full of passion, treachery, pride and love, in a lavish, traditional production by Éric Génovèse at the Vienna State Opera.

Before the screening, we will discuss Anna Netrebko's incredible success in this role with musicologist Natalia Surnina, press secretary of the Moscow Philharmonic.

This production of 'Anna Bolena' caused a real sensation among European critics and audiences: Anna Netrebko's triumph in the title role was hailed as her greatest achievement since her famous 'La traviata' of 2005 on the Salzburg stage. Netrebko portrayed the usually condemned Anne Boleyn as a deeply wronged woman torn by passion, opening a new chapter in her acting achievements as the prima donna of the Vienna State Opera.

Netrebko's superb partner in this production was mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča. The two singers proved to be perfect rivals on stage – their unique voices, striking looks, and astonishing acting left no one indifferent. King Henry VIII, performed by the brilliant Italian bass-baritone Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, was truly fortunate to find himself caught between such forces!
