Великий немецкий композитор Людвиг ван Бетховен верил в то, что искусство способно объединить людей. Он был вдохновлен «Одой к радости» Шиллера, с ее пылким призывом к единению и братству. Морис Бежар, мечтавший вплести танец в великий симбиоз музыки и голосов, в свою очередь, последовал за музыкой Бетховена, за звучащими в ней взлетами и падениями, за трагедиями и победами человечества.

Великая музыка Бетховена. «Ода к радости»» Шиллера. Зубин Мета за дирижерским пультом. Жиль Роман, звезда бежаровской труппы, ныне ее худрук, читает (на французском) пролог на слова Ницше. Кажется, что в это спектакле встретились эпохи и цивилизации, нации и расы, люди и сверхъестественное.

«Девятая симфония» – ода возможностям человеческого духа, а не гимн во славу его. Такой ее создавал Бетховен, так ее интерпретировал Бежар, так играют, танцуют и поют артисты спустя двести лет после премьеры симфонии и спустя полстолетия после создания балета. Сейчас, кажется, людям вновь важно, чтобы им напомнили, что они – люди и многое способны преодолеть.
